The EFM Feature

I think of the formative experience of my parents’ generation, as 9/11 was called earlier. The formative experience of my parents’ generation was JFK getting shot. They know where they were. They can always tell you where they were when it happened. I can tell you where I was on 9/11. So can everyone my age. But it was different. On 9/11, we were attacked. It was not like a crazy person shooting the president. It was people from another country invading our homeland and attacking us. It was more similar to Pearl Harbor. And I think that our generation has reacted to 9/11 in a way similar to the way that that generation reacted to Pearl Harbor. And that is, they went to war.

This portion of Charles’s interview with Jim Lehrer made me think of how people criticized America’s youth for not ever knowing strife or turmoil…for having it too easy. Well, as Charles pointed out, young Americans are answering the call.
Thanks, Charles, for the reminder.
On a side note, if you ever say, “Straight-UP, dude!” again in an EFM post, David, Dawn, and I will wrench away your editor responsibilities and take back the perfect pancake device we got you for your upcoming wedding.
