The EFM Feature

And you thought I was kidding about Senator McCain’s base. Thanks to his recent gambits, he’s re-transformed from being a former MSM heartthrob courting nasty evangelical right-wingers back into a saint. Just ask the Times of London, which calls him “the principled Arizona senator” just after saying he “may drop out of the 2008 race by September if his fundraising dries up and his poll ratings continue to drop, according to Republican insiders.”
For the record, I think this speculation is a bit premature. The real story here is the media’s hilarious–dare I say it?–flip-flopping as to whether Senator McCain is a crusader or a sellout. Of course, the answer depends on whether they agree with what he’s saying, not what the reality is–since as we all know, the main reason his campaign is in trouble is immigration, and the MSM certainly is not in the conservative base’s corner there. The same goes for the MSM’s attempts to savage Governor Romney for the brave stands he took on traditional marriage and the sanctity of life in Massachusetts–if he had made his name chasing after money in politics or tweaking Pat Robertson, they’d love him.
