When Abraham Lincoln first ran for the Illinois Legislature, he wrote to his “Fellow Citizens”, (“the independent voters of this county”), in a March 15, 1832 announcement in the Sangamo Journel of Springfield, that “…upon the subjects of which I have treated, I have spoken as I thought. …as soon as I discover my opionions to be erroneous, I shall be ready to renounce them.”
