I know it’s early, but this is still good news. Alone among the Republican contenders, Mitt leads Obama in a poll of registered voters. Keep in mind also that polls of registered voters tend to understate Republican support. The most accurate polls are of “likely voters,” not registered voters, so there’s a good chance that Mitt now leads Obama by an amount outside the margin of error.
Why? As NRO’s Robert Costa notes, “It’s the economy, stupid,” Yet it’s not just the economy. If it was, then more than one Republican contender would be leading Obama. It’s the combination of the struggling economy matched with the one Republican that voters recognize with real (and demonstrable) economic expertise.
On occasion, I hear friends say, “I like Mitt, but I don’t think he can win.” My response is simple: Not only can he win, but he’s got the best chance of all the Republicans to do it. And now I have yet another poll to back me up.
