It is in times like these that we must turn to The Dude. The conservative world may be swept by Rick Perry hysteria, and the polls may contain ominous warnings for Mitt fans everywhere, but Mitt himself seems pretty calm. And for good reason. No one’s roughed him up. No one’s urinated on his rug. He’s just faced a tough news cycle. Or three. No big deal.
Look, Rick Perry is formidable. I don’t doubt that. But I can’t think of a single primary season where there weren’t dramatic swings in momentum — several swings, in fact. In 2007, John McCain’s campaign was entirely written off. In 2008, Hillary Clinton shocked Barack Obama in New Hampshire, temporarily derailing The One. The examples are legion.
While there’s always a chance of a completely unique election, I’m betting that history will be a good guide, and we’ll need to fasten our seat belts, maintain our cool, and — like The Dude — realize there are “strikes and gutters; ups and downs.”
