The EFM Feature
new york doll - before and after

My Faith and Family Channel is giving away five copies of the re-released documentary New York Doll — it’s the best documentary I’ve ever seen.  It’s about the bass player of the 1970s glam punk rock band New York Dolls who converts to Mormonism and becomes a librarian.
The movie is not about Mormonism.  In fact, it doesn’t play up Mormonism, nor does it treat the faith ironically.

A movie that involves Mormonism that isn’t hysterical or preachy?  Yeah, that happened.

Oh my gosh….this is one of my favorite movies. We saw it when it competed at the Sundance Film Festival. It’s one of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen and I recommend it highly.

What touched me in this movie was the story of a man trying to find meaning in his life. It is hard to escape the grip of drugs and fame. This New York Doll did it. The joy in his eyes as he joined in a reunion concert was palpable. Because this time, he was playing his music for the pure joy of it, while staying true to his Lord.
